Levi Sherwood is a home grown international extreme sports superstar. He has been crowned Red Bull X-Fighters World Champion in 2012 & 2017, is a double Gold Medallist at the X Games and Nitro World Games, and been a nominee for the Laureus World Sports Awards.
Sherwood started riding motorbikes at the age of 4, starting his motor-cross racing and then progressing to Freestyle Moto-X. He shot to stardom in 2009, when as a 17 year old he was a late call-up to the Red Bull X-Fighters event in Mexico. In front of 42,000 screaming supporters, Sherwood beat the best riders in the world to finish on top of the podium.
In 2010, Sherwood was the only New Zealander at the X-Games in Los Angeles, picking up a Silver Medal in the Moto X Freestyle behind Travis Pastrana.
Sherwood was in a league of his own in 2012, winning the Red Bull X-Fighter’s rounds in the UAE, Spain and Australia to end the season as the World Champion.
He is continued his extreme sport feats in recent years finishing runner-up on the 2014 X-Fighters Tour, picking up silver medals at the 2012 and 2015 X Games, won the Freestyle section of the inaugural Nitro World Games in Salt Lake City in 2016.
In 2017, Levi was at the peak of his powers, winning two gold medals at the X Games in Minneapolis for Moto X Freestyle and the Moto X Best Trick, winning the Red Bull X-Fighters World Champs in Spain, and the Nitro World Games in Salt Lake City. He revolutionised the sport that year, becoming the first person to land a no-hander double backflip in competition.
The 28-year-old might be best known for his outrageous stunts such as but he is also a pioneer in ramp and bike development. Sherwood, designs and manufactures custom made components for his bikes at his carbon fibre composite parts business in Sanson.
Sherwood is nick-named the ‘rubber kid’ through the incredible extensions he manages on his mid-air motorcycle tricks. His precision and dedicated practice regime has consistently made him one of the world’s best FMX riders.
His deeds are legendary world-wide, and now New Zealanders have a chance to see Levi Sherwood in action at the Big Boys Toys 21st Birthday Show in Auckland from 1-3 November.
